Chapter 6
The Happy Ending

Steven had gone to Canada for five years already. During these five years, Kathy tried not to remember him. However, Steven was always in her mind. Kathy could not control it. Sometimes, she cried. She could not forget Steven. On the other side of the Earth, Steven was unhappy, too. He also could not forget Kathy. He sometimes wanted to meet Kathy. However, he knew that he must work hard on his studies first, so he had never come back to Hong Kong in the five years. However, he finished his secondary school this day already. He wanted to find a job in Hong Kong, or continue his studies there, but he did not want to stay in Canada.
The plane to Hong Kong arrived. Steven stepped out of the airport.
“Five years. Things have changed,” Steven said to himself. He then called a taxi and went to his aunt’s house. He decided to stay there first. If he could find a house later, he would like to move. After he had put down his luggage, he went to the prison to see his father.
“Father, I’ve missed you!” Steven said when he saw he father.
“Good boy, I missed you, too,” his father said. “Have you finished your study in Canada yet?”
“Ah…I have finished secondary school,” Steven said.

“Why don’t you continue to study in Canada?” His father asked.
“I don’t like Canada. I don’t want to stay in Canada for so long. If I continue to study, I would like to study in Hong Kong,” Steven told his father.
“Are you thinking of that girl again?” His father asked.
“No, father. I have forgotten her already. Let’s talk about other things; Have you been happy during these few years?” Steven asked.
“Don’t talk about others things. I know that you’ve been thinking of that girl these past few years, haven’t you? I have stayed in prison for a few years already, I always think of the wrong things I did. If I hadn’t been put in jail, I would never have thought that I was wrong. Steven, I would like to thank the girl who told me the wrong things that I did.”
“Father, you have changed,” Steven said.
“Yes. These past few years, I have always been thinking of these questions. Now, I know that the girl was right. Steven, go and find her again. Don’t be angry with her anymore. I killed her uncle and she tried to help him. She is a good girl. Don’t try to forget her or you will regret it.” His father said.
“Thank you, Father. I know what to do now.” Steven said and went out. Steven thought deeply after that. He knew that his father was telling him to find Kathy again. At first, he wanted to do that. However, he thought that his father might be angry with him so he didn’t. Now his father suggested he find Kathy again, so of course he would.
It was Friday afternoon, Steven knew that Kathy was in school, so he waited at the front door of the school. Every thing was just the same as the time he left.

Suddenly, he saw the girl that he had been always thinking of during these years. It was Kathy. Kathy had grown up and was more beautiful.
“Look at that boy, Kathy. Is that Steven?” A friend of Kathy’s, Michelle asked. Steven went straight to them.
“Long time no see. How are you?” Steven said.
“We are fine, Steven,” Kathy’s other friend, Candy said. Kathy was happy to see him again. However, she was frightened to face their conflict. She said nothing.
“Shall we have a talk somewhere?” Steven suggested.
“I want to but I have to go home immediately. Sorry, Steven,” Said Michelle.
“What about you two, Kathy and Candy?” Steven asked.
“I have to take my brother back home today, Steven,” Candy said, “Sorry.” After that, Michelle and Candy went away.
“Michelle, Candy, Wait!” Kathy said, but they were running home already. Only Kathy and Steven remained.

There was a pause.
“Would you like to go with me?” Steven broke the silence.
“Ah…All right,” Kathy said. They walked to a restaurant and sat down. Kathy kept silent.
“Two glasses of orange juice, please,” Steven said to the waiter.
“I still remember that you like to have orange juice,” Steven said to Kathy after the waiter had gone.
“Ah…yes,” Kathy said.
“I am coming back to Hong Kong to continue my studies,” Steven said.
“Which university would you like to go to?” Kathy asked.
“I don’t know. Which one would you like to go to?” Steven asked Kathy.
“Maybe I would like to go to the Hong Kong University, but I am not sure,” Kathy answered.
“Then I would like to go there, too,” Steven said. Kathy didn’t know what to say. She was happy, of course, because Steven would like to be with her. Nevertheless, she didn’t know how to face him.
“I am sorry for what I said in the airport. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but, one thing that I want to tell you is, I want to be with you,” After he had finished, out he went.
“Steven, wait…” Kathy said, “I think I forgive you truly, never doubt that,” The last sentence was hardly audible but Steven could hear it.
“You forgive me?” Steven cried out with happiness. Everyone in the restaurant looked at them simultaneously.
“Shh…” Said Kathy. She blushed. Steven was delighted. He knew that he would no longer be Kathy’s friend only but her boy-friend.
Kathy and Steven are now in the Hong Kong University. They are very happy to be together.
