Chapter 4
To Police Station

After reading the diary, Steven was so upset that his father was really the murderer. He stood still there just like a statue. Kathy did not know what to do, but she wanted to help her uncle by telling the police the truth. However, Steven was there, so she could not do anything. The house was silent. Suddenly, Steven’s father came. They did not want him to know that they had found out the truth.

“I brought a friend back home today, Dad!” Steven cried.
“OK.” Steven’s father said.
“What should we do now?” Kathy whispered to Steven.
“Do you want to tell the police?” Kathy asked quietly again.
“He is my father……” Steven said.
“Do you think that your father should not be punished?” Kathy asked.
“But he is my father!” Steven said angrily.
“If you don’t want to tell, why don’t you kill me? I saw your father’s diary!” Kathy said.
“I…I do not know…” Steven did not know what to say to Kathy. He did not know what to do, although it was his father, he was still the murderer.
“You want to tell the police, but he is your father. If he wasn’t your father, you would report it to the police. Is that what you are thinking?” Kathy asked.
“I think that is…” Steven said in a very low voice.
“Then go and tell the police, if you are a good boy, come!” Kathy wanted Steven to go to tell the police.
“I do not know…” Steven did not want his father to be put in jail.
“If you do not go, I will go by myself!” Kathy said firmly at last. She thought that Steven would follow her, but he didn’t. Kathy ran out of the room.
“Stop, wait, Kathy!” Steven took the diary in his hand and ran after Kathy. At that moment, Steven thought deeply. He knew that he had to go to tell the police that his father was the murderer, even if he was his son. He did not want to be wrong again. He soon caught Kathy.

“Listen to me, Kathy! I would like to go to tell the police the truth,” Steven told her.
“Is that true?” Kathy did not believe him.
“Yes. I thought deeply about that. You are right. I don’t want myself to do the wrong thing. Let’s go,” Steven said.
“I don’t believe you. You may tell the police that I am telling a lie,” Kathy said. Then Steven took out the diary and showed Kathy.
“Here is the diary. If you don’t believe me, you can take this and tell the police on your own.” After he had finished, he started to go.
“Stop, Steven…” Kathy said, “Come and we can go to my uncle’s house first and find the handkerchief, then we will go to tell the police together.”
Kathy went to her uncle’s house with Steven. They did not talk during the journey. They were silent on the way. At last, they arrived. They went to the big tree and dug up the handkerchief. They did not have any communication. However, the knew what the other thinking. After they found the handkerchief, they went to the police station together.
“We want to tell you that John Chan was killed five years ago. He did not commit suicide. Here’s a handkerchief and the murderer’s diary,” Kathy said to the police when they reached the police station. Steven did not say a word. He did not want Kathy to say his father was the murderer. However, he knew that his father was.
“I will ask the other police to help you.” The police answered.
“Thank you very much.” Then Kathy put down the diary and the handkerchief. After she had left her address and telephone number, Kathy and Steven left the police station. Kathy felt hungry. She told Steven. However, Steven seemed not to be hear that.

“Steven, I feel hungry! Don’t you hear me?” Kathy said in a louder voice.
“…Ah… I am sorry. Let’s go and have some food,” Steven said. He was very unhappy. He did not want his father to be put in jail.
